Outpatient total hip arthroplasty : the future?

With advancements in minimally invasive surgical technique, pain management and rehabilitation proto- cols, prevention of post-operative complications, outpatient total hip arthroplasty became a realistic goal. This study reports our experience performing assessing its feasi- bility safety. Between December 2015 January 2018, 52 arthroplasties were performed. We implemented peri-operative col that included education, improved analgesia rapid rehabilitation. Patients asked about any complications they had experienced after surgery the perception their as outpatient. Any early emergency department visits, acute office appointments or hospital re-ad- missions registered. Fifty-one patients (98,1%) enrolled met discharge criteria achieved goal going home on day surgery, only one patient (1,9%) required an overnight stay. There two visits to room, with re-admission night surgery. no major post-discharge short-term follow-up (minimum three months). Only reported significantly negative experience. this first Belgian reporting out- primary arthroplasty, data demonstrate does not result excessive re-admissions other due discharge. suggests can be performed safely successfully appropriately selected who ambulatory protocol declared themselves highly satisfied.
